Last evening was a beautiful encounter with friends and food in the Rose District of Broken Arrow at another new restaurant for me, In The Raw. If you have never been to the Rose District on a weekend evening…when it’s not 100 degrees…it was almost magical. It’s very pedestrian friendly, just the right amount of extra lighting, local street musicians serenaded those who were eating outside or just sitting and enjoying the ambiance, and it felt safe.
We gathered at In The Raw, my fifth foray into the Vegan Chef Challenge restaurant crawl. We decided to just try everything that was offered on the Vegan Chef Challenge. We even went off the Vegan Chef Challenge menu and ordered their Vegan Gyoza as an appetizer, which our wonderful waitress suggested to us.
The Vegan Roll sushi was okay and it had some much needed wasabi atop the roll but we added soy sauce to add more flavor. It always amazes me that people assume that vegan also means no spices. (Ask me sometime about my experience with vegan fajitas!)
The Candied Tofu Miso Ramen was tasty. The Candied Tofu was not as intensely flavored as it could have been but the red peppers were delicious. The soup itself was really messy. That may have been more because we were trying to share the bowl and scooping out noodles onto a flat plate was interesting. But the seasoning was good.
The Vegan Chocolate Mousse was very different. One of my dining mates described it as almost fudge! It was definitely dense and dark chocolate. Those who ordered it did take the leftovers home.
It was a busy place and again, too loud for older ears, but we just talked louder! It was a fun experience but when I venture to the Rose District in the future, I will try another restaurant…there are a lot of new adventures waiting on that three block district.
