VSoT: Say Cheese

If you’re like me, you have a deep and abiding passion for cheese. Cheese can make any dish better, from pizza to macaroni, from salad to sandwich.

If you’re like me, you have a deep and abiding passion for cheese. Cheese can make any dish better, from pizza to macaroni, from salad to sandwich. It can be enjoyed on its own, with crackers, bread, fruit, wine, or as an ingredient in countless dishes. Cheese is versatile, delicious, and nutritious. Cheese is also fun to explore, with so many varieties, flavors, and textures to choose from.

Naturally, going vegan creates a taste and texture cheese conundrum for a lot of people because of different preferences and expectations when it comes to cheese, and those expectations are high! If most people took an anecdotal informal poll, the consensus would be that most vegan cheese is not good. The other cumbersome challenge with cheese is that some vegan cheeses do not melt very well, which forces creative solutions when cooking.

Personally, cashew cheese has been one of the few cheeses that I enjoy. Until I visited a place in Austin, Texas called Rebel Cheese. I don’t know exactly how or what they do to make “vegan cheese that tastes like real cheese”, but they have successfully lived up to their tag line. Of course, Austin is hours from Tulsa, but the good thing is they will ship their cheese to your door. But wait there’s more. Another Vegetarian Society of Tulsa member plans to bring some Rebel Cheese this Saturday to the monthly potluck for everyone to try.

If that doesn’t get you excited, this month is packed full of vegan meetups. Tandoori Guys is having their monthly vegan buffet September 7th between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. September 10th the Tulsa Vegans will be at McNellie’s in South Tulsa. The Committee of Consciousness will be having a family friend event called The Tulsa Vegan Experience on September 16th, and the Tulsa Vegans will be having lunch at Roppongi on Thursday, September 21st. So check out our calendar for all the upcoming events.
